Project 22 — Barrel-vaulted wine cellar and tasting room

Wine Cellar

A single room built for wine and lingering: a barrel-vaulted brick ceiling over rough stone walls, arched alcoves lined with diamond racks, and a long tasting table beneath a wrought-iron candle chandelier. Like The Study, it is a close study in materials and light rather than a full residence.

Notes on the design

Wine Cellar is another single-room study, like The Study: one space, worked out closely in materials and light. A barrel vault of old brick spans the room over walls of rough stone, and the walls themselves open into a run of arched alcoves, each fitted with dark wood cabinetry and diamond racks that cradle the bottles at an angle. Built-in shelves of books and hanging stemware fill one alcove, and a stone stair rises at the far end past stacked wooden crates.

At the center, a long, heavy tasting table seats a small gathering on leather stools, lit by a wrought-iron candle chandelier and the warm glow of sconces along the walls. The lighting is kept low and warm on purpose, so the room reads as old, quiet and a little hidden: a place to open something special and stay a while.
