Project 24 — Thatched-roof bar on a lagoon-side deck

Tiki Bar

A thatched pavilion bar set on a broad timber deck at the edge of a Polynesian lagoon. Rough-hewn posts carry a steep pandanus roof over a bamboo-faced bar, while lounge sofas, umbrellas, and an open rail keep the turquoise water and the mountains beyond in view from every seat.

Notes on the design

Tiki Bar is a single open-air pavilion, designed to do one thing well: give people a reason to linger by the water. A steep hip roof of pandanus thatch sits on heavy, rough-hewn timber posts, deep enough to throw shade across the whole bar, while the open sides let the trade winds straight through. The bar itself is faced in bamboo, with a working back bar behind and high stools pulled up all around.

The pavilion sits at the center of a broad timber deck with an open cable rail, so nothing stands between the guests and the lagoon. Lounge sofas and umbrellas spread out along the edge for those who would rather stretch out than sit at the bar, and the turquoise water and the mountains across it do the rest.
