Project 23 — Backyard potting shed and kitchen garden

Potting Shed

A small backyard building with big light. Weathered board siding and a green metal roof keep it modest among the trees, while a glazed gable end and a row of skylights flood the potting benches inside. Out front, a kitchen garden of raised beds and gravel paths runs right up to the door.

Notes on the design

Potting Shed is the smallest project here, and one of the most personal. The idea was a backyard workroom that feels as good to be in as the garden around it. Weathered vertical boards and a green standing-seam roof keep it quiet among the trees, but the gable end facing the garden is glazed right up to the peak, and a row of skylights runs along the roof, so the benches inside are bathed in daylight all day.

Inside, everything has its place: potting benches wrap three walls with shelves below for soil and seed, stools pull up to the work surface, and the tools hang in a neat row beside the half-glass door. A cobblestone floor takes the wear. Outside, a kitchen garden of raised beds and gravel paths, with tomatoes, melons and greens, runs right up to the door, so the shed sits exactly where the work happens.
